Tietoa bändistä
The name of the band, A Modest Proposal, is somewhat derived from Swift's wonderful piece of satire, but the main reason for the name was the fact that we wanted something that would sum up our ideology as a band. A Modest Proposal fit what we were trying to do musically. We never wanted to blow your mind or bore you to tears. We just set out to defy genre as much as possible and write accessible music that we could still feel proud of. The concept of AMP is relaxed intensity. We didn't want you to realize you were listening to complex music. So it's sort of like technical, complex music that doesn't sound like technical, complex music. As if that made any sense......
AMP formed in early 2003. James went to school with Ian for three years between 1997 & 2000. They were good friends and hung out even after James switched schools. James met Chase at his new school in 2001 while Chase was still with a band called 13th Avenue. The band formed after James refused to stop nagging Chase to jam. After the first jam session, it was clear that there was a definite chemistry between the three musicians, and a second jam session was planned. Songs began to emerge, and in spare time, Ian & James began to arrange their ideas to make a go at forming a band. One might say AMP wanted to push the limits of the trio format, sonically speaking, but this was a temporary goal because their true ambitions involved expanding into using a second guitarist and vocalist(s) (James had some interesting second guitar parts composed as you can hear in 1 song) but aside from Jason Perez, who jammed with AMP a few times, there was no one that fit well enough with the band on all levels. The compositional process went like this: Ian & James wrote the songs, and Chase improvised around with what they were playing until he found a rhythmic motif that complemented the song and that everyone liked. AMP are big fans of improvisation, and after finishing the compositional process for the music, they made the point to leave the sections of the pieces aleatoric or indeterminate. If they were especially feeling a groove, someone might have a new thought that would improve the song; therefore, most of the changes were done with head nods. Sometimes there were train wrecks, but you won't hear those, only the not too horrible takes. It is unfortunate that AMP was somewhat of a short-lived project. After High School the band dissolved due to the relatively stifling Montgomery, AL music scene. It is not out-of-the-question for AMP to re-form, but it doesn't look like that will be happening soon... Check out Prajna, James & Ian's new project! Or check out Syrin or Phosophis.
